House (now Senate!) Passes Ban on Lead in Toys

Yay!! (The bill was passed 424-1) Now onto the Senate it goes, where it could possibly pass before the end of this week and the August recess. The president opposes the bill, but has not threatened a veto. Would he really veto it? These are our CHILDREN we’re talking about here, what’s to oppose?! Children are priceless.

The bill calls for the toughest lead standards in the world. It also places a ban on toys containing six types of phthalates. Third party testing will be required of all products before they are marketed to the public. The Consumer Product Safety Commission will get an expanded budget and much more authority.

Vegetable Wash. Mix 1 tablespoon of white distilled vinegar in 1.5 quarts of water and clean your veggies.

Deodorize the Lunchbox. Soak a slice of bread in white distilled vinegar and leave in lunchbox overnight.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

What the heck is this and why should I avoid it? We keep hearing SLS and that it’s bad, avoid it. But why?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and it’s relative Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), is the chemical that causing the foaming action in soaps, shampoos and anywhere else you expect to see suds. Both are esters of sulfuric acid. These chemicals are irritants. Itchy scalp, eye irritation, swelling of hands, etc. Most are likely attributed to SLS or SLES. While SLES is usually less irritating, it’s commonly used with dioxane, a known carcinogen. While both are easily absorbed by the skin, SLES can not be metabolized by the liver, making it stay in your body much longer.
