FDA is finally concerned about BPA!

It took long enough. FDA has finally come forward to say you should take pre-caution with BPA. Did you know that Japan phased out BPA over 10 years ago? Why can’t we do that here?

FDA Says Bisphenol A (BPA) Exposure Is of ‘Some Concern’ for Infants and Children

Is your child ingesting Ammonia?

burgerI read an article this morning over at Natural News regarding ammonia in hamburger meat. It seems as though one of the wonderful beef companies is taking the leftover cow meat, usually intended to be used for dog food, injecting it with ammonia and selling it to fast food restaurants and SCHOOLS. Sadly, the USDA approves this practice!

Why are we poisoning our children? According to the National Institute of Health, just breathing ammonia can poison you!

A company called Beef Products, Inc has been injecting ammonia into leftover beef to kill the e.coli. School lunch programs used 5.5 million pounds of this chemical laden beef in 2008. Sadly the ammonia does not always kill the e.coli and salmonella.

The USDA exempted this company’s beef from testing. They just assumed the injection process made the beef so safe that testing wasn’t needed! How many pounds of e.coli beef have they shipped out? How many times in the past year have you heard of a beef recall? How much more would have been recalled had this company’s beef also been tested. It’s sad they are allowed to do this, but even more so that our government is allowing them to poision our children. No company producing edible products that normally get tested should ever be exempt for any reason.

If there weren’t already enough reasons to give up fast food, maybe this will be the reason enough for you. As a homeschooling mom, I don’t have to worry about the school lunch aspect, but I guarantee you I’d be packing a lunch for my kids today and everyday!

Aspirin is more deadly than Swine Flu!

aspirinIt’s no secret that I’m against getting the H1N1 vax. I found this article very interesting and wanted to share.

My favorite part of the article:

That’s why I’ve always stated a simple truth that still holds true today: People who seek out vaccine shots are the same kind of people who regularly play the lotto. Both decisions demonstrate a complete lack of understanding risk vs. reward. In fact, if you get a swine flu vaccine injection on the same day you buy a lotto ticket, you have a greater chance of buying a winning lotto ticket than being saved by the swine flu vaccine.

Playing the lotto is actually smarter than getting a swine flu vaccine shot. Plus, the lotto ticket won’t potentially cause neurological damage that puts you in a coma or causes the spontaneous abortion of your baby — both of which have been happening to people after receiving H1N1 vaccine shots.

The sad fact is that people are dying from this flu, but guess what, people die from the flu every year. The sensationalism of the swine flu is causing the news to report more swine deaths than seasonal flu deaths. Getting the public riled up and scared. Seems to be working in their favor. The numbers will be skewed. The ER’s are not testing to see which “flu” you have, they just assume it’s swine flu and tally you in to the count. I’ve heard more than one instance where a person has gone to a family doctor, after being told they have swine flu at the ER, to be tested to find out it’s only the seasonal flu or no flu at all.

Anyway, there are far more deadly things you encounter on a daily basis. The swine flu is no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Homeschool Skedtrack Wins!

HSSTAs a homeschooler of 3, well 4 on some days, I’m always looking for organization and something to keep us all on task. I’m pretty sure that in our 5th year, we’ve finally found it!

Homeschool Skedtrack is a FREE online lesson planner, scheduler, and tracking system rolled into one. The heart of the system is the automated scheduling of activities that frees you from the headache of rescheduling everything once an activity/lesson is missed.

You can put in your “students”, all of their courses, they’re schedule, track grades (if you wish), create report cards and transcripts. I spent a month getting everything put in for the next school year, well, not quite all assignments yet. I knew that having a kindy now, the big kids would need something to track what they need to do each day as I would be too busy with the little ones. This is helping TREMENDOUSLY. Each student gets their own log in. They log in each morning and see what assignments are to be done, they check them off when completed. I log in when I can and approve things. I can edit assignments as needed. Subjects can be scheduled whatever days you want, so they don’t have to be done each day. If something isn’t completed, it shows up the next time that subject is scheduled.

To be honest, it was very confusing to figure out at first, but once I got the hang of it, I love it. The kids do as well. They’re no longer waiting for me to decide what subjects to do or make the necessary copies (did all of that at the beginning as I put the assignments in). They’re pretty much on their own, they just need to make sure they grab me when I’m free for those subjects where they need me. My oldest son, T1, knows what is expected of him and for the most part gets it done! I’m not hounding him to stay busy and stop getting distracted. He knows what he has to complete each day, he can do it in the order that satisfies him and he can see what he’s done and what’s left to do.

To continue my lovely organization attempt, I did my own version of Sue Patrick’s Workbox System. She has a great system, but it required too much of me and too much space in my house so I modified it. I bought each child a 30qt Rubbermaid tote to keep all books, binders, papers, pencils, crayons, everything together. They just grab their box and go. When not in use, the boxes go next to my desk so that as I have time, I can look through completed work. No more searching the house for an hour to find that missing book or pencil (yes, that has happened quite often!) I’m finding though, as we’ve used for a few months now, that T1 is getting a bit lazy with returning his books to his box. It’s still better than before though so that’s a plus.

Train- Save Me, San Francisco

trainsmsfTrain released a new album this week, “Save Me, San Francisco” featuring their new single “Hey Soul Sister”. This album is a return to the sounds of the ’90s when the band first formed. Train has had many wonderful songs over the years and I see this album as no different.

The band has also just kicked off a 25-city concert tour with Uncle Kracker. Check out their website to hear the new song and see the concert schedule.

Target Catches On!

targetbagI love my reusable bags. I use them often. I love stores that give a little incentive to customers that reuse bags, like Giant. Target is now jumping on board! Yay! (I love Target!)

The program begins on November 1st for all stores. For each bag you bring in and use, you get 5-cents. The program was tested in 100 stores and resulted in a reduction of 58% of plastic bags used. That’s a lot of bags not ending up in the landfill!

Of lesser excitement is CVS’s new reusable incentive. Customers will be required to purchase a 99-cent tag to be scanned with their rewards card. Customers will get $1 cash bonuses on their CVS cards every four times they buy something but don’t request plastic bags. I guess it’s comparable to buying a 99-cent reusable bag, but the whole scan a tag card, wait 4 purchases for a reward just isn’t as exciting.
