Who needs a phone book anyway?!

Just a few days ago we recieved a big yellow phone book. That book went straight from the mailbox to the recycle bin. I can’t remember the last time I used a phone book. With the internet, it’s faster and more up to date to just look it up online. There are many informational resources to find phone numbers and addresses.

Today in my inbox, I found an email from a few days ago regarding YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. You can sign up and have yourself removed from receiving phone books! Excellent!

How many Earths do you need?

This Footprint Calculator is a short little animated quiz to determine how many Earths you need to support your lifestyle. It will ask a series of questions to determine your Ecological Footprint, how much productive land and sea is needed to support your activities. Once you finish, you’ll be met with some ideas for reducing your footprint.

As with any calculator, this one doesn’t address everything. It does not mention composting or cloth diapering, buying second hand. But, I think a calculator that does address all issues would be one long quiz to take! Regardless, I came up with needing about 3.9 Earths.

U.S. POPClock Projection

I have been way slow in posting this week, it’s been a busy week around here. Last night we sat down to watch a movie and one of the “previews” was this commercial from thetruth.com. The part where the sign is being held up that says “Tobacco kills 1200 a day”, just really got me thinking. If that many a day die from Tobacco, how many die per day? How many are born per day? It just seemed like a really high number. I never pay attention to population counts.

So off to Google I go. I came across the U.S. POPClock Projection. Wow! I really had no idea what the population was. At the time of this writing (Saturday, Aug 23, 1:17pm EST), the population is about 304,950,469. No doubt when you read it, it’s going to be higher. By the time I hit the publish button, it’ll be higher. Approximately one birth every 7 seconds. Approximately one death every 14 seconds. I’m getting about 12,300 babies born every DAY. Basically for every one death, there are two births.

Eco-Friendly Fundraising

For the past few days I have been on the lookout. My son’s soccer team needs money for tournaments and things and I was thinking a fundraiser would be an excellent idea. I get tired of the same old fundraisers all the time and my kids aren’t even in school. What I want is an eco-friendly, environmentally concious, green fundraiser. If you’re looking for something beyond ink cartridges and cell phones, it’s not quite an easy task.

A google search will produce numerous companies offering money for ink cartridges and cell phones. Some offer more money than others, some offer free shipping. FreeRecycling offers up to $3.60 for inkjet cartridges and up to $20 or more for cell phones. They want absolutely no damaged items. Kartridges for Kidz accepts both inkjet and laserjet cartridges. They offer either money or points. The points are redeemable for various items a school might need. They provide prepaid shipping via Fedex. Funding Factory collects inkjet, laserjet and cell phones. Free shipping is provided via UPS. Earnings are either in cash or points. Points are redeemable for items from their rewards catalog. I’m very impressed with their catalog! Ecophones collects inkjet cartridges, cell phones, ipods, laptops and more. Free shipping is provided via DHL. They will accept non-working and damaged items, but not at full price.
