A grocery store with no packaging. So many things can’t be or aren’t recycled, packaging takes up space (and shipping weight), so of course, eliminating it is a wonderful idea. A couple of gyus in Austin, Texas aim to do just that. Their new grocery store, in.gredients, will sell 100% package-free products. Shoppers will need to be prepared to transport their goods home, but disposable bags (yuck!) and compostable containers will be available just in case. The store will sell all the same things you are accustomed to seeing in a grocery, with the exception of junk food and packaging.

Plans are to open the store in October 2011. I hope these guys succeed. I want to one day shop there!! And since moving to Texas, quite possibly Austin area, is high on my to do list, I might actually make it there Check them out at their website- in.gredients.com

In case you’ve been hiding under a gluten free rock, let me be the first to tell you, gluten free hamburger buns are on the way! And hot dog buns, but that’s, for whatever reason, less exciting. Hamburgers!

I am so excited. The anticipation is killing me. In case you’ve been hiding under a gluten free rock, let me be the first to tell you, gluten free hamburger buns are on the way! And hot dog buns, but that’s, for whatever reason, less exciting. Hamburgers! Since going gluten free, there is one food I’ve not been able to enjoy- a really good burger.

Both companies that make the best gluten free bread known, are releasing hamburger and hot dog buns. Both Rudi’s and Udi’s are releasing these new products in May. As for bread, I don’t really favor one company over the other. I love them both. I hope their buns hold up to the quality and yummy-ness I’ve come to expect from them.

My first burger will have to have bacon, maybe some avocado. I am (or was) a fan of the Bonzai burger at Red Robin so I’ll probably need to recreate that one at some point as well- pineapple and teriyaki.

If you haven’t already, head on over to Rudi’s Gluten Free Bakery and Udi’s Gluten Free Foods and sign up for your $1 coupon! With the cost of gluten free foods, every coupon counts!

It’s enough to make any mom think it’s impossible. Well, fortunately, there are ways you can green your lifestyle on a budget! Swapping things with friends, or even strangers, and buying used are the top and least expensive ways you can go green. Young kids won’t notice the difference between a used toy and a new toy. Clothing can always be second hand. Visit Goodwill or Salvation Army, try Craigslist and even Freecycle. Kiwi Magazine has a great article with several websites you can visit to swap or buy used on many different items. Definitely worth a read! I’ve also assembled my own list of tips:

Don’t just try to get things second hand, try to pass your used items on as well! One person’s trash is another’s treasure. Try to find someone to pass your child’s used clothing on to. Don’t be afraid to ask, most anyone would be happy to accept, if not for money savings alone.

Don’t be afraid to think ahead. I keep two very large totes full of clothes outgrown by the big kids, ready for the little ones to grow into. Sure, it takes up space, but it saves a ton of money.

Always check for used first, especially for big purchases. I’ve gotten so many things off Craigslist for a fraction of what I would pay new. It might take longer to find what you’re looking for, but time spent is money saved.

Think before buying. Do you really need it? Do you really need it new, right now? Many times we can make do with what we have in order to save up or wait for a sale. I’ve been waiting on a KitchenAid mixer for 2 years now Eventually, I’ll have saved money and I’ll happen upon a great sale, for now, my handheld mixer is working just fine.

What are your tips for going green on a budget?

You’ll get 30% off diapers and wipes, an extra 15% off subscribe and save items and the free shipping. The shipping deal is only for the first three months, but you can extend it (for free) by purchasing $25 or more from the Baby Store. Each $25+ transaction will extend your free 2-day shipping by one month.

Subscribe and Save is a great feature and worth looking into, especially for gluten free items. I’ve found that extra 15% savings sometimes works out better than any local store and you can adjust the delivery schedule as needed. I have a few “subscriptions” on hold for now until I need them again.

Just another way to save a little money.

Dry clothes come out, wet clothes go in and I don’t have to worry about leaky plastic bags.

These bags come in two sizes and can be used for many things – dirty clothes, wet clothes, dirty diapers, gym clothes, bathing suits, etc. They come in 2 sizes: 11×14 and 14×17. Orginal retail price is $17.95 and $21.95, but select styles are being cleared out at $8-$12. And, as an added bonus, they are Made in the USA. That’s always a big plus for me!

I think I’m going to go with the DotTastic (pictured above) bag this time. What about you? Get it at Mini Me Baby Gear now before it’s gone!

Yay! (I love Target!)

The program begins on November 1st for all stores. For each bag you bring in and use, you get 5-cents. The program was tested in 100 stores and resulted in a reduction of 58% of plastic bags used. That’s a lot of bags not ending up in the landfill!

Of lesser excitement is CVS’s new reusable incentive. Customers will be required to purchase a 99-cent tag to be scanned with their rewards card. Customers will get $1 cash bonuses on their CVS cards every four times they buy something but don’t request plastic bags. I guess it’s comparable to buying a 99-cent reusable bag, but the whole scan a tag card, wait 4 purchases for a reward just isn’t as exciting.

In today’s world, research is done constantly. As a result, what you thought was safe yesterday is no longer considered safe today. It’s hard to stay up to date on all the research and recommendations. New products are created all the time, regulations change, recommended lists of products have to be updated. As summer comes, everyone starts thinking sunscreen. It’s important to remember that even the winter sun can cause damage and sunscreen should be used year round. I’ve taken the time to come up with a short list of what I feel are suitable sunscreens to keep your family safe. There are other sunscreens out there that could make my list, but I tried to stick with the more common and readily available sunscreens.

Natural sunscreens use Zinc Oxide to protect against UVA and UVB rays. Zinc Oxide is on the FDA’s generally recognized as safe list. The zinc oxide is responsible for the lovely white appearance you get on use. Micronized Zinc Oxide creates the same barrier, but far more transparent. Nano Zinc Oxide particles are even smaller and therefore even less transparent. However, there is some concern that the nano particles can be absorbed by the skin and the effects of that are still unknown. Since the whole point of “safe sunscreen” is to avoid having chemicals of any kind absorbed, I feel it best to avoid nano zinc oxide.

Titanium Dioxide works in the same way as Zinc Oxide. It comes in the same “sizes” and carries the same hazards. In my research I have found that Zinc Oxide does protect a little more than Titanium Dioxide so I would not rely on a sunscreen consisting only of Titanium Dioxide, but rather one that incorporates both or only Zinc Oxide.

A note on the Environmental Working Group- while I love EWG’s work and use the cosmetics database often, it is important to read and learn about ingredients. EWG is now classifying all titanium dioxide as hazardous. They are not distinguishing between titanium dioxide and nano titanium dioxide. As mentioned above, there is concern that the nano-particles can be absorbed by the skin and the effects of that are still unknown.

On to the list, as with anything, what works for one, may not work for another. It’s all trial and error unfortunately. If you have experience with any of these, please do let us know. These are in the order that I would like to try them as I have not used any of these yet!

Comments: I like the short ingredient list. I’ve read many great reviews. While I haven’t tried this yet, it’s first on my list.

Contains: both Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Cosmetics Database Rating: 1

Comments: This product is also known as Sunbrella and Earth’s Best.

Contains: both Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Cosmetics Database Rating: 4 (I think this is because EWG list Micro Titanium Dioxide and Micro Zinc Oxide where I’m finding regular Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide elsewhere)

Comments: For this one, I’m finding conflicting ingredient lists. Whether is regular Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide or micro, I would like to try this product and feel it should make the list.

Sadly, my faves from last year did not make the list. We’ll use up what we have and replace with something from this list.

A note on SPF- many people associate SPF with the amount of time one can spend in the sun using a sunscreen. SPF actually refers to the amount of protection a sunscreen provides. It has nothing to do with time. Applying a SPF 50 sunscreen does not mean you can go hours longer before reapplying than you would with a SPF 15. A product with SPF 30 provides approximately 97% protection. A product with SPF 60 provides approximately 98% protection. Both should be reapplied after an hour and a half. If you burn easily, you’ll want a higher SPF, those that don’t burn so easily can get by with a lower SPF.
